Local area

Sea, moor and a pub, all within half an hour.

The Haddon valley runs from the moor to the sea, and we’re halfway down it. Times are from our gate, in the car unless we say otherwise, and in no particular hurry.

Map of the Haddon valleyThe campsite sits in the middle of the valley beside the stream. Haddon village is a mile north up the lane, with Fennimore Farm to the west. The stream rises on Haddon Moor at Bellstone Tor to the north-east and runs south-west to the sea at Scarrow Cove. Wenford Halt on the steam railway is to the south-east, and the line runs on to Chaddlecombe.Haddon MoorThe seaMill Lane1Haddon2Scarrow Cove3Bellstone Tor4Wenford Halt5Fennimore Farm6ChaddlecombeCarry On CampingNNot to scale

  1. A village street of white thatched cottages and a stone pub with benches and hanging baskets outside

    Village and pub

    Haddon and the Drover's Rest

20 minutes on foot, up the lane or along the stream path

A street of thatched cottages, a church with a very loud bell and the Drover's Rest, which does proper pub food, local cider and a quiz on Wednesdays. The stream path is the nicer way; take a torch for the walk back.

  2. A small sandy cove between steep green cliffs, rock pools showing at low tide

    Beach

    Scarrow Cove

25 minutes by car, then 10 minutes down the cliff path

A small sandy cove between two headlands, with rock pools at low tide and no café, so take the picnic. The path down is steep but short. The coast path runs along the top in both directions.

  3. A path through heather up to a granite tor under a big cloudy sky, two walkers on the way up

    Moorland walk

    Haddon Moor and Bellstone Tor

15 minutes by car to the Bellstone car park, then 40 minutes up

Open moor at the head of the valley, purple with heather in August, with Bellstone Tor at the top: a heap of granite with a view to the sea on a clear day. The stream that runs past your tent starts up here.

  4. Steam railway

    Haddon Valley Steam Railway

10 minutes by car to Wenford Halt

Seven miles of branch line down the valley to Chaddlecombe and back, pulled by a tank engine the volunteers have been restoring since 1979. Weekends from Easter, and every day in the summer holidays.

  5. Farm shop

    Fennimore Farm Shop

5 minutes by car, or 25 minutes on foot across the fields

Sausages and burgers for the barbecue, eggs from the yard, cider, cheese and Fennimore's own ice cream, which is worth the walk on its own.

  6. Market town

    Chaddlecombe

20 minutes by car, or the steam train

The nearest town: a Thursday market in the square, an ironmonger that sells every tent peg ever made, a launderette, a chemist and the nearest supermarket.

  • Scarrow CoveRock pools are best two hours either side of low tide. We chalk the tide times on the board by the shop door every morning.
  • Haddon Moor and Bellstone TorMist comes down fast on the moor. Borrow one of the shop's walking maps; just bring it back.
  • Haddon Valley Steam RailwayThe timetable is pinned up by the till. Children love the guard's van; ask nicely.
  • ChaddlecombeForgotten the hook-up lead or the airbed pump? Try the shop first, then Chaddlecombe's ironmonger.
